How to calculate mpg: It's simple to compute your gas mileage. All you need is to write down how many miles you drove and how much gas you put in the tank. Divide the miles
by the gallons of gas. This will give you miles per gallon. If you have a car or truck with a mileage computer in it, just turn it on! If not, here is exactly what to do, its easy, and
just a few steps.
First you need to measure how much gas you put in the tank:
I usually let my truck go until the “low fuel” light comes on. My owner’s manual says there are 3 gallons left in the tank when that light comes on. Then I fill it up.
Since I know the tank holds 25 gallons full, and it had 3 gallons in it to start with, then it had 25-3 = 22 gallons put in. If you don’t have a low fuel light, there is different method to
calculate mpg.
Another way to make the measure is to wait until your tank is on the half mark. Look in your owner’s book or the web and find how much your tank holds full. Divide it by 2. That’s how many gallons you need to put in to fill it up. So, fill 'er up.
Next drive your car or truck until you burn up as close as possible back to the low fuel light or ½ tank mark.
Write down the miles you drove to burn up that gas. Do the math:
Divide the miles you drove by the gallons you put in. This will give you Miles per Gallon - mpg.
Note: This is how to calculate mpg for an average mpg calculation. It includes in town and freeway miles.
Alternately you can just plug in your miles driven, and gas used to into the MPG calculator below.
