Electric vehicle sales are what drives the market. There have been many projections as to how many EVs will or won't be sold. But at the end of the day, it is how many have actually been sold that counts. We break sales up into BEV cars and trucks, eBikes, cycles and scooters, NEVs, and other EVs. Hybrid car and truck sales are not given here.
Electric Car and Truck Sales
2011 was an important year for EV sales. It was a ramping up and shake out year with some well advertised car makers hitting the skids. However, even more started up!
EV models that have stopped production: Aptera, Dynasty, Subaru Stella, Think City, the Tesla Roadster, and Zenn.
Some of the EV concepts and models that started up in 2011: BMW Active E (lease only), Coda, DeLorean, Honda Fit, and the VW ET Van Concept.
2011 sales reached about 60,000 units. In 2012, EV sales have reacted to increasing gas prices.
March 2012 witnesses a record 52,000 HEV and BEV sales in the good old USA. That was 3.64% of total light auto sales, another record.

Electric Bike, Cycle, and Scooter Sales
Electric bike, scooter, and cycle sales continue to charge ahead. Manufacturing and sales statistics at this time are inconsistent, varying widely with the source. We have attempted to capture the trends by sifting through and analyzing the sources. Please report any inconsistencies.
There were somewhere near 29 million sales in 2011. It is not possible to summarize the hundreds of specific models on this page. Sales of electric bikes, scooters, and cycles are combined and reported as eBikes here. The bulk of sales are electric bicycles.
China both produces and consumes over 90% of eBikes. Approximately 27,000,000 or so eBikes were sold in that country in 2011. Roughly 29.5 million eBike units were manufactured in China.
The next largest consumer outside of Southeast Asia is Europe with just over 1 million units sold in 2011. France and Germany lead the way, with the much smaller Dutch population simply soaking up eBikes.
The USA continues to grow in eBike use. The forecast trend is for eCycles and eScooters to increase
in sales due to their higher power and speeds. Japanese eBikes have been consistently brisk there. The wild card is the 380,000 or so units distributed in other countries.
The NEV segment of the EV market has been going strong for over ten years. While the combined sales are not as many as eBikes, they are worth tabulating. Two market leaders are listed.
The two biggest NEV producers worldwide are likely GEM and ZAP. To date, it is estimated that Zap is closing in on 120,000 sales. GEM has racked up an impressive 45,000 units.
Zap manufacturers a wide range of smaller EVs from eBikes, scooters to ATVs and NEV cars and trucks. GEM is well known for it's full range of golf carts.
